Can You "Hack Your Metabolism" With Lumen? My Product Review



“How can I boost my metabolism?” is a common Google Search that I’m sure you’ve typed in yourself. People are constantly looking for ways to burn fat faster and better, whether in the form of supplements or some other means. But what if I told you that there is an affordable, scientifically validated and non-invasive way to track and improve your metabolism? It’s called Lumen, and I’m all about it.


I’ve recently gained an interest in personalized medicine. And it’s not because I suffer from a health condition; rather, I’m curious to see what’s out there in the market, and how I can use new innovations to improve myself. As I began to read more studies on research related to increasing metabolism, I suddenly came across a device called Lumen.


Lumen is an IoT device that can be connected to your iPhone or Android. The user of the device simply inhales into it for 3 seconds, then exhales for 10 seconds, and based on the CO2 concentration, Lumen can instantly calculate whether or not you are burning fat or carbs for fuel. Using this knowledge, Lumen creates a daily personalized meal plan to help users “develop a flexible metabolism, which means your body can efficiently switch between using carbs and fast as a source of fuel, according to its needs.” With this brief overview, I will now dive into the step by step process.


The Process


Delivery time and cost:

The package arrived in the mail after 7 business days, and the retail cost is $299 USD.




Setting up/configuration:

It takes all but 5 minutes to set everything up. First, I powered-on the device and installed the Lumen app on my Smartphone. After configuring the device, it was ready for use. Before you begin the process of implementation, Lumen asks a short list of questions to better understand why you are using the device (for weight loss, maintenance, enhancing athletic performance, etc.), and to collect some initial data on you like your weight, height, level of physical activity, and so on. This enables the program to create a fully customized experience for you. After this, you undergo your first breath analysis.


Daily use:

To maximize your Lumen experience and do it correctly, you want to make sure that you use the device first thing in the morning. Your morning breath analysis will tell you what you are burning for fuel at the start of the day. Ideally, you want to be burning fat in the morning, not carbs, and Lumen will let you know this information.

The breathing technique is as follows: you inhale into the device for approximately 3 seconds, then exhale for 10 seconds. Based on how steady and strong your exhalation is, you may have to repeat the process 2 or 3 times (but it only takes 2 minutes at most).


Once Lumen analyzes your breath, it creates a personalized meal plan to fit your goals. For example, if your objective is to lose weight and your morning breath analysis indicates that you are burning mostly carbs, then Lumen will suggest a meal plan that will help you switch your fuel to fat.


You can also use the Lumen device before and after exercising to see what you are burning more of, as well as before and after meals. The device also comes with an in-app weight tracker that is synched up to its metabolism tracker. If your goal is to shed pounds, this feature is incredibly useful because if you notice you are struggling to lose weight, it could be because you are eating too many carbs. You can use these insights to adjust your diet and get back on track.


Metabolism Score

It takes on average around 4 weeks of consistent daily use of Lumen to produce a customized “Flex score” for you. This metric “represents your metabolism’s flexibility, and is based on your breath measurements." Below is a description of the Lumen Flex score, as well as my own score for reference. However, keep in mind that in the interim you can still track your daily fuel stores, and you do not need to wait until getting your Flex score to achieve results!



Overall opinion:


Technology/innovation: 10/10. This device is scientifically validated on multiple fronts. “Lumen's technology has been scientifically proven to accurately measure metabolic fuel usage when compared to the gold standard (RER) for measuring metabolism in multiple validation studies.”

User Experience: 8/10. The breathing technique can take some getting used to. If you have asthma or smaller lung capacity, Lumen may be a bit of a learning curve in terms of beginning usage. After about 5 attempts, I was able to perfect the technique.


Affordability: 9/10. While $300 might seem a bit pricey, most conventional at-home medical IoT devices are in the same price range, and are usually even more expensive. Prior to innovations like these, metabolism tests were accessible to only a select few wealthy individuals (it cost thousands of dollars). Given that anyone can now have access to this amazing technology, I believe the cost justifies the science.


So, can you hack your metabolism?

You sure can. Anyone who is diligent about their macronutrients (fats, carbs, protein), exercise routine and diet can turn their life around by taking the right steps. Lumen helps you accelerate your weight loss and athletic goals, and get you on the right track faster. I would highly recommend this device to anyone who is looking to achieve better quality of life and overall health.
